You are not alone

In the UK approx. 1.6 million people receive some form of physiotherapy each year.

Every year, Britain's 39,000 chartered physiotherapists help millions of people manage the effects of illness, accidents, disability and the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Back and shoulder pain alone costs the UK £2 billion per year in absenteeism, lost production, and costs to the Health service. Back pain is extremely common - about four in five people are affected at some point in their lifetime.

Physiotherapy is not the latest fad

The ancient form of modern physical therapy, or physiotherapy, dates back to 460 BC.

In 1894 physiotherapy was recognised as a distinct and specialised branch of nursing regulated by a Chartered Society.

Meet the team

Lynda Harvie and Lorna Seath at the Birchtree Clinic at 3 South Vennel, Lanark
Lorna Seath - BEd(Hons) BSc(Dist.)

Born and educated in Glasgow's East end, Lorna's career spans 30 years, initially qualifying in 1981 with her first degree in Physical education from the Dunfermline college of P.E.

Lorna retrained as a physiotherapist at Queens College in Glasgow, qualifying in 1992 with a B.Sc. (Dist) in Physiotherapy. After starting her own business with a physiotherapy home visiting service Lorna established the Birchtree Clinic in 1998.

Lorna is known for her gregarious enthusiasm and friendly manner to her patients. Lorna has a very strong commitment to those with injuries and disabilities. Her other interests include being a keen gardener, painting botanical flowers in watercolours, and stone sculpting.

Lynda Harvie - Dip Phys MCSP

Lynda graduated from the Grampian School of Physiotherapy, Aberdeen in 1988. Lynda worked within the NHS for 10 years before moving to private practice at the Birchtree Clinic where Lynda has been for the past 13 years.

Lynda is an enthusiatic and dynamic physiotherapist with a real interest in musculoskeletal problems especially in the areas of muscle imbalance and dysfunction. She is also qualified to use acupuncture when and where appropriate.

On a personal level Lynda enjoys keeping herself fit and she has competed in running, cycling, and a triathlon. Lynda has a husband and three active teenage boys so Lynda is fully familiar with strains, sprains, knocks, and bruises of both day-to-day activities and in competitive sport.

Lorna says

"Injuries to the human body occur in all walks of life and regardless of age.

Whether you are a keen gardener, a weekend footballer, a DIY specialist, an elite athlete or have a chronic condition your body will at some point will become injured to some degree.

Whilst the body has excellent healing capacities help from a physiotherapist will assist the body to undergo repair and rectification."

Lynda says

"If you have a muscular problem, it is often a mistake to totally immobilise the affected area, for instance by wearing a sling for a frozen shoulder.

Very gentle movements, frequently, combined with heat pads will keep a degree of flexibility, and stop the problem getting worse."
